On Location with Edge of Shadows

My debut novel, Edge of Shadows, is set in the Uptown/Lakes District of Minneapolis, MN. It’s amazing how much inspiration that area proved for my writing of that story.

Edge of Shadow’s main character, Ellie Coulter, lives and works in the neighborhood, and I thought she’d be the best person to tell us a little bit more about why she chose to settle there.  Ellie..take it away!

Ellie: Thanks Cege! Although I am a bit uncomfortable being in the spotlight like this, Cege told me it would be easy because all’s I had to do was share why I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else but Uptown.

It all started when I had to make the decision about where to open my coffee shop. I lived in the burbs at the time, but in my exploration of the cities over time (I’ve lived here all my life), there was always something about Uptown that drew me in.

The first thing you notice is the architecture. In downtown Minneapolis, just a few short miles north, there are the usual massively tall buildings that are trying to touch the sky, but in Uptown it’s a mishmash of old and new buildings that are more hunkered down to the ground. Everything here centers around the Hennepin/Lagoon Ave intersection and builds out from there. I’ve watched lots of movies in the Uptown Theater on its single screen, and I actually prefer it to the modern cineplexes.

A block up from the Lagoon theater is Calhoun Square, which is the Uptown equivalent of a suburban mall. You’ll find shops, restaurants, bars, and even a gym there. Then spreading out from Calhoun Square, you’ll find more independent shops standing alongside some bigger name chain stores that we all know, but for some reason, it all works.

Because space is at a premium, parking is always a little bit of a challenge so a lot of people do their shopping and night life clubbing on foot. It’s just easier to get around. You’ll see all sorts of people on the streets: young and old, professional, hippie, artistic, and goth. They are all here and they all blend in together. For someone like me, who has never felt like I fit in anywhere, the “come-as-you-are” vibe immediately made me feel comfortable.

So I leased a small space not far from the Hennepin/Lagoon Ave intersection and set up my coffee shop. I worked hard to make the space welcoming for everyone and I feel really fortunate to have some regulars.

When I got divorced, it was natural for me to move closer to work, and I found a great little studio apartment in one of the old homes just a few blocks from my shop. There are lots of places like that here. The big old houses that were built around the turn of the last century don’t always make sense to keep as single family homes, so the owners subdivided them into smaller apartments. It’s quiet and I love it.

Adjacent to the Uptown commercial district are three recreational lakes: Lake Harriet, Lake Calhoun, and the Lake of the Isles. I walk my dog Skipper around Lake Calhoun almost every day.

It’s fun visiting with customers who come into the shop from out of town because they always say that when they think of Minnesota they immediately picture big snow drifts and hostile winters. Sure, winters are a bit more extreme here than other parts of the country, but Minnesotans don’t let a little thing like the weather keep them indoors. Regardless of season, there are always walkers and joggers taking advantage of the trails that follow the curves of the lakes. (And during the winters, the lakes freeze over and you can actually walk on them- I’ll admit that freaks me out.)

But one of my favorite parts of living here is the mansions over on the Lake of the Isles. Cege will tell you that I’m a bit of a daydreamer, and I love to just walk along the bike path and imagine what life would be like if I lived in one of those big houses. One of my employees, Linda Jordan, owns one of them. In Cege’s book, Edge of Shadows, I actually get to live in it for awhile, but things get pretty hairy pretty quickly.

History, art, theater, food, people, and fun. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Uptown, Ellie! Hopefully the next time someone visits Minneapolis, they’ll want to check it out.

CG News: January Wrap-Up

January was quite a month in the Cege Smith universe. I made a big decision and decided to enroll Edge of Shadows into Amazon’s KDP Select program. (If you have no idea what that is, google it because there just isn’t enough time in the day to go through all of the opinions, rants, outrage, and support that this program has generated in the indie writing community and I won’t be able to do it justice.)

In any case, net net of that decision was that EOS is exclusive with Amazon until mid-April. Ultimately, I felt like this was a good decision for me because it wasn’t getting a lot of traction through any other distribution channel. And by enrolling in the program, Amazon gives authors 5 “promo” days where you can set your book for free. If you are wondering why that’s attractive- it helps boost your overall rankings in the Amazon store which in turn makes you more visible to potential readers.

EOS went free Jan. 21-22nd and the results were nothing less than astounding:

10,500 downloads in 48 hours

Let’s just sit with that number for a little bit…

That kind of exposure money can’t buy. If even a 1% of those people read EOS then I have (hopefully) gained visibility of 105 new readers who, if they liked the book, will return to buy more. This is good stuff!

I also received 2 new reviews for EOS, and was interviewed on two blogs in January:

Were Vamps Romance (includes a review of EOS)

Book Bags and Cat Naps

I had a pretty grueling end of the month with the “day job” and traveled all over the U.S. for 2 consecutive weeks.  Despite that severe restriction of time, I was able to finalize my manuscript for Heiress of Lies (formerly titled Angeline’s Quest) which I expect to release the week of Valentine’s Day.

Whew- seems like a lot. But things are only going to pick up from here!  I’m going to make “CG News” a regular feature for anyone who is looking to keep up to date on what I’m up to.

And as always, THANK YOU for your support. The Cege Smith Universe wouldn’t exist without you, Dear Reader.

Bring on 2012: Novel Publication Galore!

So this is the post that will declare for the all the world that I am going to be a bit crazy this year.  When you have a family, a full-time job which requires 30%-40% travel, and volunteer obligations already on your plate, publishing even 1 novel in the course of a year would be an outstanding accomplishment.

I’ve learned a lot since October in publishing Edge of Shadows and The Soul Garden. I’m figuring out how long the production of a novel takes, and believe it or not, writing only gets you about 40%-50% of the way toward having it available for readers. Editing takes at least that much time again, and then you have formatting and distribution.

But I digress.  I was talking about sanity. Or insanity if you will.

In 2012, I decided to give myself a BHG (Big Hairy Goal). I wouldn’t publish just one novel. Oh no.

I would publish 6 of them.

(There was a very small crazy voice that said I should try for 12, but I crammed that voice back into a little box in the back of my mind.)

The only reason this probably works, at least in theory, is because I have at least that many novel concepts spinning around in my head. And I’m also getting questions about things like when the sequel to Edge of Shadows will be available.

I’m going to add one really BIG caveat here and call your attention to the word “TENTATIVE” below.  I reserve the right to change my mind, move things around, or pull something altogether if I need to. Sometimes, the muse doesn’t like delivering on a schedule and sometimes life just happens and you can’t control it.  I’m also not rushing any of my book titles because that usually just comes to me as I develop the story arc.

So without further ado, here’s how this year is going to roll:

Cege’s *TENTATIVE* 2012 Publishing Schedule

February 2012: Angeline’s Quest (Book One, The Robart Chronicles)

April 2012: Purgatory (Book One, Purgatory series)

June 2012: Untitled (Edge of Shadows sequel)

August 2012: Chosen (Book One, Twisted Soul series)

October 2012: Untitled (Book Two, The Robart Chronicles)

December 2012: Untitled (Book Two, Purgatory series)

Hopefully you can see that I actually am developing 4 different series in 3 different genres. Edge of Shadows and The Robart Chronicles will sit within paranormal romance, Twisted Souls in sci-fi/thriller, and with Purgatory I’ll be trying my hand at YA paranormal romance.

I know it would be a whole lot easier for marketing/promotion if I’d just stick with one genre, but I can’t control the characters who have started badgering me to tell their story. So I’m just letting it all loose and we’ll see where it takes me.

I will continue to keep all of you updated as my plans solidify. As always thank you for your support and I’d love it if you’d drop me a line at cege@cegesmith.com or comment below with your thoughts!

You asked for it- You Got It!!

I have been overwhelmed by the amount of love, support, and encouragement I’ve received from my little tribe of fans over the last week.  I know that I still have a long way to go in my writing journey and a lot still to learn, but the feedback I’ve received is making all of it so worth it!

By far the most popular question I’ve gotten so far though is: Where can I get a physical copy of the book?

I admit this surprised me.  With ebook sales exploding and everyone diving into the tablet market, I thought for sure my digital versions would be the most common request.  That may be the case soon, but as of right now, people want the paperback!

So I am delighted to share that the paperback version is now available on Amazon!!

But I wanted to do a little something special with the holidays right around the corner, knowing that you may be purchasing a book for someone special on your list. So I’m offering:

FREE Shipping for Autographed Paperbacks!!!

Here’s the deal.  From now until 12/2 you can buy as many autographed copies from me (for the same $9.99 price that you would pay on Amazon) as you want and I’ll ship them to you for FREE.  Here’s what to do:

  1. Send me an email at cege@cegesmith.com with the subject line: HOLIDAY OFFER.
  2. Include your name, shipping address, # of copies, if you want any personalized autographed copies (e.g. “Please sign the book to my grandma Rose”), and your preferred Paypal email address if different than that email address you are sending from.
  3. I will send you a Paypal invoice once I receive your order for you to complete the transaction. ($9.99 x # of copies ordered)
  4. I will be placing my inventory order on 12/3 and will be shipping the copies out no later than 12/10 to ensure a timely pre-Christmas arrival.  (Depending on demand, I may place 2 orders so you may get it sooner.)

That’s it!  It’s that simple.   And don’t forget that if you just want to purchase a regular paperback copy, you can do that now on Amazon.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to drop me a line.

Thank you and Happy Shopping!!
